Do You Hear What I Hear

Main - Sermon Title

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Advent invites us to pause, to listen, and to prepare our hearts for the arrival of the Savior. Through four powerful stories leading up to the birth of Jesus, we discover how God still speaks—through promises, through invitation, through calling, and through good news that brings great joy.

Week 1 (Nov. 30): Zechariah & Elizabeth – Hearing God’s Promise (with Hope)

Scripture: Luke 1:5–25

God’s promises often arrive quietly, breaking into ordinary lives at unexpected moments. Zechariah and Elizabeth had long lived with disappointment, their prayers for a child seeming unanswered. Yet into their waiting, God spoke—promising not only a son, but the beginning of His redemptive work through John, the one who would prepare the way for the Messiah.

Zechariah’s doubt reflects our own struggle to trust when circumstances seem immovable. Still, God’s word proved faithful. His temporary silence became a season of reflection that made room for joy. Elizabeth rejoiced at God’s mercy, testifying that His promises are never empty. Advent reminds us that God still speaks hope into our waiting.

Week 2 (Dec. 7): Mary – Hearing God’s Word with Surrender

Scripture: Luke 1:26–56

Mary receives a calling that disrupts every plan she might have imagined—a calling filled with grace, mystery, and cost. Yet she responds with profound faith: “Let it be to me according to your word.” Her surrender models the posture we are invited to take as God speaks into our lives.

The Magnificat reveals Mary’s heart: one that rejoices in God’s mercy, trusts His justice, and embraces His upside-down Kingdom. Advent invites us to listen with the same humility and openness, trusting that God’s word brings transformation and hope.

Week 3 (Dec. 14): Joseph – Hearing God’s Call with Obedience

Scripture: Matthew 1:18–25

Joseph’s world is shaken when he learns Mary is pregnant. Yet in his confusion and pain, God speaks: “Do not be afraid.” The child is from the Holy Spirit—Emmanuel, God with us. Joseph’s obedience is courageous and costly, requiring trust in God’s plan over his own understanding.

His faithful response draws him into God’s unfolding story of salvation. Advent reminds us that hearing God’s word is more than receiving information—it’s stepping forward in trust, even when the path is unclear. Obedience becomes an act of worship and participation in God’s mission.

Week 4 (Dec. 21): The Shepherds – Hearing God’s News with Joy

Scripture: Luke 2:1–20

To ordinary workers in a silent field, heaven bursts forth with the announcement of Jesus’ birth: “Good news of great joy for all people.” The message transforms their fear into joy and sends them running to witness the newborn Savior.

The shepherds respond by glorifying God and sharing what they had seen and heard. Their joy becomes proclamation. Advent invites us into the same response—letting the good news interrupt our routines and overflow into praise and witness.

Christmas Eve: The Word Made Flesh – Hearing God’s Heart

Worship Schedule

Scripture: John 1:1–18

John tells the Christmas story from eternity: the Word who was with God and was God has now become flesh. The Creator steps into His creation, bringing light no darkness can overcome. Christmas reveals God’s heart—not distant or abstract, but present, personal, and full of grace and truth.

In Jesus, we see the God who comes near, who enters our darkness, and who makes us children of God. Christmas invites us to marvel at this mystery and to receive Him with faith and wonder.

Christmas Day: Simeon & Anna – Hearing God’s Fulfillment

Worship Schedule

Scripture: Luke 2:22–39

Simeon and Anna spent years waiting faithfully for God to fulfill His promises. When they encounter the infant Jesus, their waiting gives way to worship. Simeon proclaims, “My eyes have seen your salvation,” and Anna begins telling everyone who longs for redemption.

Their joy reminds us that God’s promises may take time, but they never fail. Christmas Day celebrates that Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s long-awaited salvation—a light for all people and the hope of the world.
