What are parables? They are teachings from Jesus that "reveal the nature of the kingdom of God and/or indicate how a child of the kingdom should act." (Bailey, Through Peasant Eyes, p.11) In every parable, the original hearer is pressed to understand something and/or act in a certain way in response to the parable. Each parable invites us to do two things - to reflect on kingdom teachings universally applied to all people and to respond in the world, vocation, and relationships in which God has placed them.
